Alumni Statements

Here are correspondences from some of our alumni.
  • When I started at Eastern, I had no intention to major in mathematics, and I took my first college Calculus class more-or-less to fulfill a core requirement; over the next few years, however, Dr. McLallen and Dr. Huddell taught me to love mathematics. The academic quality of their teaching is impressive, and I've found that many of my undergraduate classes were more challenging and interesting than some of my current graduate classes. However, Walt and Nicky offer much more than just academics. They taught me to see the beauty of God's creation in mathematics, tying my faith to my studies. Both of them have always been very caring and supportive, even beyond my tenure at Eastern, and it was their generosity of spirit, along with their passion for mathematics, that shaped my own desire to teach the subject.

  • I graduated from Eastern's math department in 2004 and have been teaching middle school math at Conestoga Christian School since then. Eastern's math department gave me excellent preparation for becoming a math teacher. The professors demonstrated a superior knowledge of the field as well as an incredible ability to teach mathematics. I thoroughly enjoyed every math class I took and knew that each professor took a particular interest in the success of each student in the program. They demanded excellence while patiently making sure we understood the concepts. They were always willing for us to stop by their offices to ask questions. I have heard many stories from friends of mine taking math clases at other schools and each time I am extremely grateful for the outstanding professors I was blessed to have at Eastern. I highly recommend Eastern to anyone seeking a mathematics or mathematics education degree.

  • I entered my freshman year at Eastern in 2001 uncertain as to what program I wanted to major in; however, after taking a course with one of the math department's professors, I knew the mathematics program at Eastern was a perfect fit. The professors in the math department equipped me with the proper tools I needed to succeed in the field of mathematics. They are very knowledgeable, patient, and consistently available when a little help is needed. I graduated from Eastern in May of 2005 with a Mathematics degree and am currently teaching AP Calculus, Pre-Calculus, Geometry, and Algebra II at Conestoga Christian School. It has been an amazing ride so far, and I have the faculty in the math department at Eastern to thank for helping me get a jump start!
